Zbyněk Baladrán is known for his films made from found images and footage from Czech television and propaganda. His interest in these is not documentary or political, but rather based on a curiosity for their construction and modes of perception in pre- and post-World War II Czechoslovakia—a motivation he calls “non-invasive archaeology.” His editing or compilation appears arbitrary, and is meant to make sense according to a subjective-associative order. Baladrán sometimes presents his films as multi-channel installations, projected from the ceiling onto stacks of blank paper on the ground. Recurring images in his works include maps, indices, text, and collections of signs and symbols.
