Zhang Dali (張大力) explains that his work is “a means of interacting with and memorializing the temporary environment that surrounds me in Beijing.” His conceptual pieces, which range in medium from photography to installation, inspect contemporary Chinese culture and its history. In 2003, Zhang won recognition for his series “A Second History,” featuring photographs that were altered for censorship during the Cultural Revolution. Between 2003 and 2005, he made life-size resin casts of 100 immigrant workers, which he numbered and strung from the ceiling in a piece called Chinese Offspring. Zhang has also been known to make grafitti portraits of Communist Party members in public spaces around Beijing—works that have not only caused conflicts between the artist and public authorities, but have also been deemed anti-patriotic by the government.
