About Zhang He

Zhang He’s painterly abstractions, which have developed from figurative compositions, incorporate oil paint so thick that they almost achieve the sculptural presence of bas-relief. Drawing influence from the impasto veins of Abstract Expressionism, Zhang is interested in color, form, gesture, and the physicality of paint. Each mark is rendered with haptic fervor, nearly carved into the surface of the painting. In work that attends to surface in a manner similar to artists like Marike Esnta or Allison Schulnik, Zhang’s work skates the boundary between representation and pure, painted abstraction.
