About Zhou Xiaohu

Zhou Xiaohu, who holds degrees in both sculpture and oil painting from the Suzhou Art Institute and the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, is best recognized as one of the leading contemporary Chinese artists using experimental films and animations. He has become particularly famous for his Claymation films, which Zhou believes stem from adolescent interests, saying, “I personally think that what I am doing today directly relates to what I did as a child.” The subjects of his work, however, are provocative and often explicit, and include war, political demonstrations, propaganda, and mass media. Zhou frequently uses global news stories and art history as reference material for creating his meticulous and satirically melodramatic narratives.
