Artsy Spotlight Auction: Derrick Adams

Artsy, in partnership with Tiffany & Co., is honored to present “Derrick Adams, I Shine, You Shine, We Shine: A Tiffany Atrium Benefit Auction for The Last Resort Artist Retreat,” an auction of a single artwork, with 100% of net proceeds benefiting the artist residency founded by Adams in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland.

According to Adams, “The piece represents our never-ending pursuit of love, and the hope of shared compassion for one another. The title highlights the importance and mutually beneficial impact of giving love and allowing yourself to receive it—as this is what growth and development is truly about. This artwork incorporates sections of clothing patterns as a stand-in for the figure and a bisected heart motif is repeated throughout as a symbol of openness and sharing. Additionally, the floral patterns envision what growth looks like when we come together to embrace diversity as our superpower.”

In 2019, Adams purchased a duplex near the center of the Waverly neighborhood in North Baltimore, which is now the home of The Last Resort Artist Retreat, an artist residency founded by Adams. The residency is the first phase of a two-part project to elevate the history and Black creative community in the Baltimore area. By emphasizing complementary therapies, the residency creates space for Black creatives to foster the lasting benefits of withdrawing and seizing possibilities endowed by new perspectives.

To mark the launch of Tiffany Atrium, Tiffany & Co. commissioned Derrick Adams to design this original artwork, from which the Tiffany Atrium logo is also derived. As a platform for social impact, Tiffany Atrium focuses on fostering and strengthening the connection between education, community, and creativity, with the overarching goal of advancing professional opportunities for historically underrepresented communities. The word “atrium” is not only a nod to Tiffany & Co.’s iconic Heart Tag necklace, but also represents the human heart and compassion—a space where people come together.
