Contemporary Pop and Street Art
When Pop art emerged in the 1960s, the movement was not just about bold colors and celebrity culture. It brought the popular world—from cartoons and advertising to apples and bananas—into the realm of high art. The aesthetics championed by Pop artists have been embraced by the global street art movement, from Keith Haring’s lovable icons to Banksy’s satirical monkeys. At times confrontational and provocative—and at others irreverent and witty—contemporary Pop and street artists are known for toying with the line between high art and low art—and transforming visual culture in the process.
