To celebrate Black History Month 2021, Artsy is launching a series of online group shows spotlighting the dynamic ways that Black artists are shaping contemporary art. In this show, “Textured Histories: From Weaving to Collage,” we examine how Black artists employ materiality and craft mediums to communicate fresh ideas.

The longstanding separation between craft and fine art has ostracized many Black artists from the art historical canon, disregarding their cultural impact and significant contributions to visual culture. Nonetheless, craft remains a cornerstone of Black artistic production, serving as a tool for liberation.
