Printed Matter

About

“A newspaper that you're not reading can be used for anything.” —Robert Rauschenberg

From scrapbooks to baseball card collections, ticket stubs saved and newspaper articles clipped, printed matter carries not only important information, but often personal significance. For artists, these cultural ephemera are also ripe with material possibilities: Pablo Picasso used bits of newspaper as raw material in his iconic Still-life with Chair Caning. Contemporary artist Fred Tomaselli uses the New York Times in several of his collages, showing that “all the news that’s fit to print” might also be fit for art making.
