Sfumato

About

In painting, a technique of almost transparent shading that allows transitions between different lines, color and tones to be blurred to the extent that they appear to almost (to use the literal meaning of the term) evaporate like smoke. Leonardo da Vinci's work is most commonly associated with the term; for example, see the face—especially the eyes—of the Mona Lisa.
