Viennacontemporary will open its doors to VIPs on September 26th, allowing galleries both local and international to sell at what has become the Austrian capital’s most visible contemporary art fair. But with just weeks to go until the 2018 edition, artistic director Christina Steinbrecher-Pfandt has announced that she will leave after this year’s fair closes.

Steinbrecher-Pfandt has been viennacontemporary’s artistic director since it launched in 2015. She had previously worked at Viennafair, which shut down after its 2015 edition. In a statement sent to Artsy, Steinbrecher-Pfandt cited personal reasons for the departure, and a spokesperson noted that she and her family will be relocating to San Francisco.

“I want to thank Christina for her great commitment and valuable contributions to our success,” Dmitry Aksenov, chairman of the board of viennacontemporary, said in a statement. “Without Christina, viennacontemporary would never have achieved this outstanding reputation on an international level.”

Steinbrecher-Pfandt’s replacement will be named in the coming months.
