On Thursday, the MacArthur Foundation announced the 25 recipients of its coveted fellowships for 2018. The winners include three visual artists: the performance, installation, and video artist Wu Tsang; painter and sculptor Titus Kaphar; and the conceptual artist and curator Julie Ault.

Widely known as a “MacArthur Genius Grant,” the fellowship has become something of a rite of passage among the biggest names in contemporary art and can provide a major career boost. It comes with an unrestricted stipend of $625,000, which is paid out to fellows on a quarterly basis over the course of five years. Last year’s artist fellows included Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Trevor Paglen, and Dawoud Bey. Previous MacArthur fellows include artists Nicole Eisenman, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Rick Lowe, Carrie Mae Weems, An-My Lê, Jorge Pardo, among many others.

In addition to visual art, the fellowships are awarded to pioneering figures in a broad range of fields, from performing arts and poetry to social justice, journalism, law, and science.
