Banksy revealed yesterday that his shredding stunt at Sotheby’s did not go 100 percent according to plan. In a video on his YouTube channel, the elusive street artist showed a test-run of the incident where the painting slides through its frame and is destroyed completely. “In rehearsals it worked every time,” a text prefacing the clip reads.
Prior to its partial destruction, the painting was known as Girl With Balloon (2006), though after the event, Banksy rebranded it as a new work titled, Love is in the Bin (2018). The work sold for $1.3 million dollars and then suddenly self-destructed. Sotheby's head of contemporary art in Europe Alex Branczik has insisted that the auction house did not know it was going to be “Banksy’d” ahead of time. It is believed that the “new” work may be worth more money in its tattered state.
