On Thursday afternoon at about 4:30 p.m., a man was filmed on a security camera walking out of a Midtown Manhattan gallery with a $16,000 sculpture. The alleged art thief, a 61-year-old Bronx resident named Zoltan Genc, was arrested by the New York Police Department and charged with grand larceny.
The sculpture that caught Genc’s attention was a stylized shopping bag by the French artist Fred Allard, on view at Galeries Bartoux on Central Park South. According to the New York Daily News, he was originally arrested for allegedly shoplifting from an Urban Outfitters store in Greenwich Village; he was subsequently charged with the art heist.
In a statement quoted by CNN, Galeries Bartoux said that at the time of the theft, its security agent was in the back of the gallery helping with an installation. The gallery’s statement added: “The suspect found himself at the right place and time with the wrong intentions.”
