A former music industry executive has been tapped to serve as interim director of the financially-troubled Documenta.

Wolfgang Orthmayer, who was previously an executive at Sony, took over as the interim director of Documenta’s parent company on April 1st. Orthmayer is in the challenging position of stabilizing the quinquennial, which has faced criticism from artists and politicians over the handling of its financial troubles. The addition of the second venue of Athens to Documenta’s regular home of Kassel, Germany for documenta 14, the last edition of the exhibition curated by Adam Sczymczyk, resulted in a €5.4 million deficit and the ouster of former CEO Annette Kulenkampff. Beyond the financial pressures, Orthmayer must also grapple with unhappiness from participating artists, many of whom rushed to publicly defend Sczymczyk and Kulenkampff following criticism of their management and documenta 14 by local and far-right politicians in Germany.
