AKINCI was founded in 1988 in Amsterdam. The gallery represents young artists as well as artists with an international reputation, whose working practice spans a range of current media, reflecting the diversity of communication means available within contemporary visual art.
AKINCI has a large focus on new developments in contemporary art. Our aim has always been to be a career-building platform as well as a solid base for the artists we represent. In the starting years Stephan Balkenhol, Thomas Huber, Albrecht Schnider, Axel Hütte, Edwin Zwakman and Andrei Roiter joined our gallery. At the same time we represent emerging artists as Cevdet Erek, Melanie Bonajo, Anne Wenzel, Gluklya, Stéphanie Saadé and Ali Kazma. The programme is defined by a diversity of media as well as cross-overs between sound, architecture, painting, sculpture and installation. In recent years artists who involve socio-political and gender issues gained more emphasis within our programme.
