Founded in Osaka in 1997, MEM opened its doors as a contemporary gallery specializing in a circle of artists who emerged in the 1980s from the Kansai region. In 2010, MEM moved to Ebisu, Tokyo, in the vicinity of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.
The gallery also specializes in modernist photography from the Kansai region (Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto cities) since the turn of the century.
