Founded in Soho in 1980 by Janelle Reiring, formerly of Leo Castelli Gallery, and Helene Winer, formerly of Artists Space, Metro Pictures's inaugural exhibitions featured artists such as Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Jack Goldstein, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, Troy Brauntuch, James Welling, Richard Prince, and Walter Robinson—artists who would later be identified by critics and historians as the Pictures Generation. The gallery would then present the first New York exhibitions of Mike Kelley, Jim Shaw, Gary Simmons, John Miller, René Daniëls and Martin Kippenberger. Metro Pictures moved to its current Chelsea location in 1997 and has continued to present critically acclaimed exhibitions with artists such as Camille Henrot, Isaac Julien, and Paulina Olowska, among others.
