On April 16th, the Brooklyn Museum will host its fourth annual Brooklyn Artists Ball in celebration of the borough’s creative community. Leading up to the event—which honors artists Jenny Holzer, Ai Weiwei, and Kehinde Wiley, and features a benefit auction, dinner, and dancing—we spoke with artists who’ve contributed to the cause about their local art scene and their donation.

Our chat with Alyson Shotz follows:

Artsy: What is your personal relationship to Brooklyn?

Alyson Shotz: I’ve lived in Brooklyn for 16 years.

Artsy: Where are you based in Brooklyn—whether your home, studio, or both?

AS: My studio is in Red Hook and I’ve been in this space for about 11 or 12 years.

Artsy: Can you tell us a bit about the work you’re donating to the benefit auction, which will be supporting the museum and the Brooklyn artist community, and why that’s a cause you’re happy to contribute to?

AS: I’m donating a black folded aluminum sculpture, part of a new series. It’s very much related to my recent work in porcelain and some large-scale sculptures. This piece is simply folded by hand and painted. The black color lends it a mysterious quality that I like. I’m happy to donate to the Brooklyn Museum as they’re doing work relevant to the community and strive to be involved with the artists and creative people of Brooklyn.

Auction bidding begins April 7th at 12:00pm EST. Register to bid and explore the Brooklyn Artists Ball on Artsy
