Special editions: 50ty/50ty’s latest releases launch at Cape Town Art Fair - February 2017
Cape Town – The latest releases from screen printing collaborative 50ty/50ty will coincide with this year’s Cape Town Art Fair. A hand-coloured special edition by acclaimed painter Matthew Hindley will launch at the fair, with new work by Mia Chaplin and Gitte Maria Moller featured alongside.
These three editioned artworks represent a diversity of South African talent, ranging in experience, artistic style, process and subject matter. Artist heavyweight Matthew Hindley and up-and-coming talent Gitte Moller are both working with 50ty/50ty for the first time. Mia Chaplin’s Apocalypse Later is her second print for the platform, the first having sold out online.
An initiative by fine art printmakers Black River Studio, 50ty/50ty collaborates with artists and illustrators to create original screen prints, releasing new limited editions every month. Within just one year of operation they have worked with a steady stream of creatives including renowned artists Michael Taylor, Julia Rosa Clark and Brett Murray.
While their portfolio includes big names, 50ty/50ty’s focus is on accessibility: connecting emerging collectors with quality work by emerging artists. Studio co-founder Jeanne Legrand describes the motivation behind the initiative: “In collaborating with artists at the studio we recognised the absence of a platform for marketing editioned work. At the same time, we met loads of young people with a keen interest in contemporary South African art, but without the funds to make large investments just yet.”
The project’s commitment to accessibility is equally balanced by a commitment to artistic integrity and quality of work – ensured by the principles and processes of the Black River Studio. Wim Legrand, the studio’s Belgian-born master printmaker, works closely with the artist from initial concept through to final print, facilitating exploration of the medium while lending his technical expertise and insight throughout the process.

50ty/50ty offers collectors access to affordable work by high calibre artists – a feat made possible through collaboration, the fine art of the screen print, and the digital marketplace. The platform is named 50ty/50ty after the collaborative process between artist and printmaker in the creation of an original screen print, and also references the number to which each print edition is limited. This slightly higher edition of 50, as well as the fact that work is sold exclusively online, is what makes the artworks affordable – with original prints ranging between R2800 and R5000 in price.
