Wacław Wantuch looks at the female body, as it was simply a beautiful form. He seeks geometry and abstract shapes. Trained to be a sculptor, instead of a chisel he uses light to masterfully sculpt his models. His nudes are not flat images but three-dimensional tributes to female beauty.
Leica 6x7 Gallery presents the new face of Wantuch. The Platinum exhibition explores his sensivity not only to the body shapes but also to his models’ personality and the context. He presents us with various types of beauty, some of which do not fit into the contemporary ideal of the cover girl.
Wantuch brings the sunlight to his studio and by accepting its unpredictability he confirms its role as the co-author of the pictures. He focuses on what is hidden in the shadows. The invisible has the greatest impact. And although this photography’s subject is naked body, there’s no simple sexuality there. Paradoxically, sensuality is born in the viewer’s mind and very often comes from the context.
This exhibition is unusual also in its form. These images are the result of a long-term experiment with one of the most precious methods for the production of photographic prints – the platinotype. Before the outbreak of the Great War, the platinotype was one of the most popular photographic technologies – later to be replaced with much cheaper and less complicated gelatin-silver process.
Prints made with this technology possess an unusual vividness. The both mild and lively gradations are unattainable in any other process. In combination with warm and natural toning, the technique accounts for a unique climate of the prints. Durability and stability of the chemical processes that occur in the course of producing the platinotype print are refered to as infinite.
Printing in platinotype is demanding - requires patience and passion. Each and every print is unique - hand printed by the artist on a handmade paper coming from the mill that remembers Gutenberg’s times.
Wantuch is the author of over seventy exhibitions and three bestselling albums, which together form the canon of the best Polish black and white nude photography of 21st century.
