Entitled ‘Shame’ after the familiar term of endearment that is so much a part of the South African vocabulary, Emma Nourse’s exhibition regards the different volumes at which individuals, including the artist herself, express their shame and anxiety. With paint suspended on fine sheets of silk, her paintings are layered with a transparency that is sensitive to how much we humans hide from and show to the world. Empathetic and quietly emotive, her artworks create a fleeting and precious moment meant to engender a sense of wonder and self-reflection.
