Abend Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition featuring the works of gallery artist Jacob Dhein. Seeking to find the perfect balance between realism and abstraction, Jacob Dhein’s paintings express a profound sense of each from an artist who has been finely tuning his passion for art since an early age. Inspired to pursue art as a career while in college, Dhein studied representational work and has since developed a knack for pushing those techniques to their limits.
When asked about his process for creating Dhein says, “When I look at a subject it conveys a feeling, which in-turn helps me envision what I want the painting to look like. From what is visualized I mentally create a process that will fabricate a similar outcome using different techniques and tools”. The expressive nature that is found within Dhein’s work is predicated on his approach. He is able to articulate those initial feelings through paint and brush.
Subjects are obscured, yet certain details and characteristics of the individuals remain wholly intact. By combining elements from different styles of painting, Dhein’s work is eye-catching, finely detailed, and weighty. As a viewer you find highly complex ideas within works that have minimal subject matter, a testament to the artist’s abilities.
Dhein’s sense of the individuals he paints is palpable. He says, “I have to see some type of inspiration or beauty in the subject matter. Without the initial stimulus I feel like my creative process is being forced rather than doing something that I am passionate about”. It is necessary for him to feel a connection, something magnetic or organic that draws him to the subject or scene. By focusing on specific aspects or characteristics, the whole image is more readily realized. Through accent colors, use of light, and calculated obscuration techniques Dhein has created a niche for himself within the genre of representational painting that is uniquely his own.
The cityscapes Dhein creates speak to those same elements that are found within his figurative works albeit in different ways. Given that there is a lot more imagery to take into account he has found a way to hone in on specific elements while still capturing the scene at large. Once again his masterful use of color and light gives prominence to the objects he wishes to highlight. The overall tone of these pieces emanates off the canvases, Dhein’s patient and thorough approach provide the works with a dynamic sense of the imagery that entrance the viewer.
The paintings of Jacob Dhein are representative of a dedicated and passionate artist who has spent countless hours developing and perfecting his craft. Upon viewing his work one gains a sense of the complex nature and studious approach of the artist. His technique is exemplary and each work he produces further distinguishes him as one of the most interesting representational artists to watch.
