Totibadze gained recognition early in his artistic career with his standout quirky, and masterfully painted still lives. Having been raised in a family of artists in several generations, he has been absorbing the knowledge, skills and techniques in painting from an early age.
Thus his work is a fusion of many genres and traditions in painting, from the Dutch still life of the Golden Age, to compositional simplicity of contemporary Wayne Thiebaud, all transformed by artists's own, precise and playful, observation and rendering of the contemporary world. His subjects are acutely contemporary, although his choice of medium - traditional tempera - references the rich history of the genre.
Totibadze’s laconic and hedonistic still-lives and landscapes are visually stunning, with multiple layers of paint as well as associations, allusions, humour and narrative.
The artist manipulates our perception on different levels: visually - creating an impactful, neatly structured composition; intellectually - by using historical and contemporary allusions, emotionally - by the choice of objects, which are always nostalgic, tempting, or other; and humorously - by assigning the painting a playful humorous title. Recently Totibadze started experimenting with fluorescent paint, which adds yet another level - an unexpected surprise of the transformation of an image as the UV lights go on.
In this collection we aimed to reflect the development of the artist's style and thinking over the last 6 years, and selected some of his very early still life work, more recent canvases, as well as the latest experimental work that sends us all the way up to the stars, made to coincide with the latest Cosmoscow show.
