Outermost Inspirations: Contemporary art, writing and the environment
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cape Cod, MA — The Outermost House is a classic of American Literature, considered a seminal work of contemporary environmental movements, and one of the reasons that the Cape Cod National Seashore exists today. Beston wrote The Outermost House based on his time in a 20×16 house on the dunes of Eastham on Cape Cod, studying and observing the wonders of the elements in this stunning setting. Written by Henry Beston (1888-1968) and published in 1928 (90 years ago), Rachel Carson said it was the only book that ever influenced her writing. Outermost Inspirations is a multi-media, multi-venue endeavor featuring contemporary artists celebrating the natural world that surrounds us.
2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the Blizzard of ’78, one of New England’s greatest storms, which washed the Outermost House (Fo’castle) out to sea. "The Outermost House marked the place where one man searched for and found his humanity in nature. That place itself has now returned to nature. We can best commemorate both man and place by continuing the search." —Wallace Bailey, Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary Director, Massachusetts Audubon Newsletter, April 1978.

Outermost Inspirations: Exhibition at the Orleans Historical Society
Mid-July to Mid-August, 2018
Featuring new works by area and national artists capturing the beauty of our surroundings. The show is curated by Helen Katherine Addison, owner of the internationally respected Addison Art Gallery.
"This past winter, Orleans was again reminded how nature can change our coastline as Beston’s The Outermost House taught us 90 years ago. The Historical Society has been saving photographic and physical evidence of these changes, and the Addison Art Gallery’s artists are recording the soul and beauty of these changes. We are excited to be working on this exhibit with Helen Addison. Our mission is to bring history and culture to Orleans and this involves finding different ways to look at the heritage of this wonderful town. Since its beginning, the Addison Art Gallery has had a solid record of showing how these historical landscapes are being seen by today's artists. We are looking forward to this fresh perspective and the beginning of a great partnership.” — Pamela Feltus, Executive Director Orleans historical Society
