Judith Seligson, River Magnolias, oil on gessoed museum board panel, 34x30 inches, 2004. Much of De Kooning's work during this period is "Paper Laid down on Canvas." River Magnolias is on paper - Musuem board - adhered to DiBond, a rigid support of aluminum with a poly core. I wonder why he chose paper. For me, it was a segue from the small matted paintings to panels. Paper is liberating in that it is expendable, and thus more connected to the artist's "intimate moods," as Arthur Danto observed.
