A.I. is pleased to present a screening of a new double-channel video work titled Wear You All Night by Sarah Choo Jing (b. 1990, Singapore). It will premiere at LOOP Fair 2017 in Barcelona, Spain.
Both photography and cinema have informed Sarah Choo Jing’s practice in a multitude of ways. Spurred by an ongoing investigation into the transitory nature of urban spaces, Choo focuses on the parallel of a hotel as a form of an empty shelter. Each room permeates both a presence of absence and an absence of presence with travellers routinely checking-in and checking-out. The hotel itself is an oxymoron as it is a dwelling that is representative of an interior space existing between the boundaries of wakefulness and slumber, working and restful, inhabited and solitary, intimacy and anonymity, lustful and apathetic. Every room is a reassuring duplicate with a pervasive sense of vacuousness amongst lone occupants.
The artist stages a filmic portrait depicting the narratives of two individuals co-existing in a hyper-real time and nonspace. Composed in a split frame format, a seamless connectivity perhaps most poignantly comes to the fore. There is an underlying double-feint of acceptance, tacit acknowledgment and even, a desire for the ephemeral. The characters transition from an emotional state of admission, querying the status quo towards a final resolution. All that remains is a lingering sense of futility amidst each of their physical isolation.
