A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of recent work by Yvette Drury Dubinsky entitled ON THE MOVE.
Dubinsky is known for her innovative combinations of drawing, print, alternative photography, and found objects. She makes collages and installations, skillfully integrating layers of imagery on various papers for complex compositions. Employing an intuitive process, Dubinsky combines relevant maps and her own and found imagery to comment on the intertwined states of our contemporary and historical worlds. Dubinsky often uses a round format to emphasize these themes.
In ON THE MOVE, Dubinsky meditates on the exodus from Syria, a place where she traveled just before the beginning of the ongoing civil war, and where she still has many contacts. She connects what is going on currently there with other population displacements: from Europe and Africa to the New World, (specifically to her own locations: Cape Cod, New York, St. Louis and Chicago), and to the Great Migration of African Americans during the 20th century from the South to the North and West within the United States. Her artwork draws on her life experiences as well as on global histories.
