New Yorkers have a love/hate relationship with summer. It’s a great time to let loose in the city, picnic in the park with friends, be sporty, or go fishin’ at the lake. It’s also a great time to get a tan or find a new love. That summer is always too short.
New York City summers get long when you are stuck in a subway car with broken AC or breathe too deeply, because the smell of the street is as strong as the pollen count is high. And one might not be looking forward to putting on the bathing suit and showin’ off that ‘beach bod.’
Each artwork in Summer Lovin’ was chosen to play just the right note in this visual chorus of summer love. The artworks in the exhibition feature obsessive flower arranging, a psychedelic sunflower, framed stained undergarments, dizzy bat relays, broken glass, riot bricks, plaster baseball equipment, fake dynamite, porcelain gym socks, frozen peeled shrimp, a breast that’s a tap light, linoleum rain clouds with a vinyl summer shower, a fake garden hose, cosmic ceramic planters, pizza sunglasses, and a whole lot more! Summer Lovin’ never sounded so good!
