Alvitr Gallery is happy to open this year exhibition series with the solo show by Zsofi Barabas, artist based in Hungary. This is the beginning of the gallery international portfolio presentation. The exhibition includes objects, paintings and drawings created by artist in different years. This approach to the exhibition helps to show the evolution of the artistic development and also to present the artistic oeuvre fully.
Monika Perenyei says about Zsofi Barabas that her works are “extensions of Zsofi’s own body and emotions”. The “extension” is the word that can be understood in several ways if we speak about Zsofi Barabas’ works. The first step is the idea of the image appearing step-by-step from Zsofi Barabas mood, emotions and world-understanding. It is a slow process of creating something extra through you and extending yourself in the world. The character of the person, his or her world-understanding can never be in static that is why people viewing Zsofi Barabas’ works experience movement inside them.
In paintings and drawings Zsofi Barabas combines straight, geometric, artificial forms with vivid, small, streamlined bio-forms. One can see the life of the contemporary person in it and the extension of the life-forms to the artificial ones or vice versa. Extension in this case can be seen as the generalization of life through the schemes used by the artists, at the same time schemes stay as much personal as possible. This is the schematic view of individual to the modern big city life.
When we watch objects by Zsofi Barabas, which appeared after her stay and education in Japan, the artist Joseph Cornell comes to the mind. At the same time the only box form and the idea to hide the concept into the box seem to be very similar. In boxes by Zsofi Barabas’ it is possible to see not the life which is trying to hide itself in the box, but the extension of everyday life which is kept with origami-like objects, small pieces of paper whimsically put on a thin wire. What we can see in the boxes is not dead artifacts of life, but the attempt to catch the life itself and to show it with our childhood believes in fairy-tale parallel world existence. And this is not a surprise that this life want to go out of the box and have no barrier for this.
All the works by Zsofi Barabas are pleasant for the eye as there structure and color deliberately show how the chaos and harmony can work together to give us esthetical pleasure and to extend our life perception through the work of art.
