Amy Li Gallery is pleased to announce that “CROSSING” the new solo exhibition of the collaborative art duo THEY, will open at 4 pm on June 7th, 2018. The exhibit take us back to the painting medium which is a new exploration for the collaborative duo based on a broader pattern.
The artistic duo THEY set up by Yang Xiaogang and Lai Shengyu, has been constantly active and at the forefront of Chinese contemporary arts since 16 years ago when the duo was formed .The diverse art forms and unique style make them outstanding representatives amongst the Idea Art artists born in the 70s. They created a method of platform painting that allows them to open a dialogue between the duo and the canvas and to describe the profound influence of time and anxiety in modern time. They use a wide range of materials in their artworks, which is rare among contemporary artists. Through their keen grasp and profound interpretation of this day and age, they are widely recognized by international academics.
The new works of the exhibition "Crossing" set out the motion. From THEY previous atonal works without brushwork and cool style to the subjective colors and emotional language transformation, we can find that THEY has gradually grown into a mature period of art, with a broader vision and deep consideration for life, the reality and art ontology .THEY uses a boat as carrier, placing all kinds of people and animals together in the same space, composed of interesting and intriguing singular sights, “Crossing”here has an intentional meaning of “delivering all living creatures from struggle”, this point of view is represented as well in “come into the world”,”contend”and ”life cycle”which is precisely THEY own artistic expression , to leave behind the immaturity of fascination for personal interest, and extend a broader view of human nature, not only for oneself but through a new collectivism expression embedded deep in philosophy.
The pictural structure of the works allow THEY to remain the subject of rational thinking intersected with humoristic stories. Occasionally irony and metonymy of art history and contemporary real life, and the visual temperament of the picture become relaxed and confident. This external seriousness and inner ease form the wonderful tension that makes people seriously thinking and smile . How to put two artists organic unity of thought and personality in one picture is an undoubtedly difficult task, but THEY is always ingenious in presenting contradictions and conflicts in an objective perspective, with a seemingly simple yet minimalist narrative language and drama to the nature of the world and the complexity of human nature. The picture reveals a more naturalistic side of Oriental wisdom.
In their own words: we call ourselves THEY because we want to let go more of ourselves into people's hearts and speak to their inner worlds and dreams. The collaboration between THEY and Amy Li Gallery is their own realistic meaning, THEY and Amy Li Gallery" set up a new exploration of "rules".
