The Angela King Gallery to present French painter
Anne Bachelier’s “A l’Ombre des Contes”-
‘In the Shadow of Fairy Tales’
New Orleans, April 14, 2018- In the Angela King Gallery, internationally collected artist, Anne Bachelier, will be presenting "A l’Ombres des Combres", In the Shadow of Fairy Tales. Opening reception will include a meet and greet with artist, April 14, 2018, 7-9pm.
When a story is “out of time,” it occupies a paradoxical setting, one that is vague yet familiar. Such stories concern archetypes: heroes, goddesses, and clowns with thousands of faces, characters that are wildly different yet always the same.
Like these myths, the narrative paintings of Anne Bachelier glimmer in the darkness of our collective consciousness. No wonder, then, that she’s illustrated several editions of classic drama--The Tempest, The Phantom of the Opera, and Beauty and the Beast—as well as the cosmos of her own “out of time” universe. Her recent work draws inspiration from poets such as Giambattista Basile, author of Tale of Tales, one of the oldest known national collection of fairytales. Basile’s stories were meant to be recited, adapted for live audiences, and Bachelier’s images retain the paradoxical spirit of performance, ephemeral yet eternal, weightless yet grounded in the physical world.
“She inhabits three worlds; the world of reality, the world of her family and friends and that world which has existed inside her head since her earliest memories,” writes Neil Zuckerman. “It is this third world that populates her drawings and paintings.”
Yet the lines, shapes, and colors of Bachelier’s world reflect our own. Her surrealism keeps one, spindly tendril curled around the physical sensations of nature. Her hand flourishes a precise, leafy filigree. The temperature of her chill fog, her dragon heat, is felt as if the supernatural beings were in the room with us, breathing.
A Bachelier painting is an open door. It ticks off the possibilities, and we choose which ones to enter—or loiter for a while in the silky atmosphere, dwelling on the iridescent threshold between worlds.
