Galerie Anita Beckers at Art Toronto 2016
Since 1989, Toronto and Frankfurt am Main have been sister cities. Recently, however, this partnership has become somewhat forgotten. Anita Beckers, along with the cultural bureau of Frankfurt and Art Toronto director Susannah Rosenstock, would like to reactivate this long-standing collaboration between the largest city in Canada and the German Rhein-Main Metropolis. That is why during this year’s edition of Art Toronto, Anita Beckers will be exhibiting exclusivley Frankfurt born and/or based artists at her stand, C 09.
Since the establishment of Gallery Anita Beckers in 1995, the emphasis has been on promoting young artists as well as the moving image. Artists like Bjørn Melhus, Yves Netzhammer, Sigalit Landau, Anton Corbijn, Kota Ezawa, William Lamson and others have shown with the gallery.
In conjunction with the mission statement of the gallery, Anita Beckers will present nine emerging artists who work in different, artistic mediums and have been represented in international exhibitions: Viola Bittl, Lena Ditlmann, Björn Drenkwitz, Jonas Englert, Christiane Feser, Norbert Frensch, Yasuaki Kitagawa, Christian Orendt and Jan Schmidt.
As well, Anita Beckers is co-curator of the B3 Biennale of the Moving Image. Debuting in Frankfurt in 2013, she was able to procure Candice Breitz’s film Treatment, which had recently premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. The B3 Biennale is an annual video festival that takes place alternately in Frankfurt am Main and in Beijing and Shanghai. The next edition, 2017, will be held once again in Frankfurt. Both Björn Drenkwitz and Jonas Englert were exhibited at the Biennales in China and Frankfurt.
Gallery Artist, Clare Langan, will be exhibiting at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Owen Sound from January 15 – May 14, 2017.
