ILLUMINATED: Stars and Skies in the Art of Chris Roberts-Antieau
Contact: Heidi Hendrick
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- Starting on Saturday, November 19th, Antieau Gallery will transform with an immersive new installation by New Orleans based fabric appliqué artist Chris Roberts-Antieau. Explorers entering the gallery will be absorbed into a winter skyscape, replete with snow, stars, and phantom memories of Fall, Summer, and Spring. The illuminated atmosphere will serve as a conduit between Antieau’s artistic inspiration and the finished artwork on display. Come join us for a celebration opening on November 19th, 2016 at 6PM at 927 Royal Street, New Orleans. The show will run until January 15th.
In her exhibition “Illuminated,” Antieau exposes the emotional undercurrent of beholding natural phenomena. A quiet solitude is expressed by human figures as they commune with the outdoors: the flora, the fauna, the majesty of the night sky, and the mystery of nature’s life cycles are all interconnected in a single existence and a single experience. The cycle of life is powerful, beautiful, tragic, and energizing. Visitors will discover nature’s nighttime mysteries, surprises, and nostalgia as the installations reveal new ideas and sensations, new illuminations.
Antieau is a self-taught artist and entrepreneur who learned how to sew in 7th grade Home Economics. She carved her own creative path, creating a unique form of artistic expression in her highly sophisticated sewn tapestries. In over thirty years as a working artist, Antieau has only seen her audience and her artwork grow in scope. Starting at small art fairs and now exhibiting her work at Art Basel in Miami, Antieau has nonetheless remained true to her unique style and iconography. She has never strayed from sharing her perspective on the world, on society, on culture, and on life.
Antieau’s meticulously crafted work explores a wide range of subject matter, from portraits of Blues musicians to meditations on eyebrows of the world’s most brilliant people. She mocks the ridiculousness of household pets and the hypocrisy of modern culture. She embroiders birds and tells the story of James Brown’s death alongside the ensuing aftermath. “Illuminated” will highlight the more mystical vein in Antieau’s art, displaying autumnal and winter moods appropriate to the season.
