Los Angeles, CA (May 22, 2017) – Appointment Only, a new project space founded by artist Lucien Smith is pleased to present its first public exhibition, Write Large and Thick, new work by Alexander Muret. The exhibition will open on June 2nd and will run through July 14th 2017. This is Muret’s first solo presentation in the United States and is the result of a 3 month artist residency at the gallery.
The show derives its title from the translation of the latin word ingrossare meaning: “to write in large letters”. The large scale paintings on display are made using collaged sheets of industrial vinyl. Known for his intimately wrought works of crayon on paper, these monumental works mark a departure for the young artist. These works are an investigation into the ability of line to convey tone and invoke a sense of weight and density. Standing in front of the work, one’s gaze touches the painting’s tension point, where the two strips of vinyl meet. The dark grey vinyl engulfs the senses as it both reflects light and absorbs it. They also seem to ask, how large and thick can composition become before it loses all impact? Full of somber quietude, Muret has transformed his material, freeing it from its original context as vinyl text. A sign vinyl’s purpose is to communicate, the artist asks the viewer to consider “What is a sign without language?”
Situated within central Los Angeles, California, Appointment Only occupies a portion of a 15,000-square- foot warehouse and – as the title suggests – is open by appointment only. Conceived to coincide with a new artist residency program to help foster creative growth and mentorship, Smith will present work by emerging interdisciplinary artists. Appointment Only is the first phase of a larger initiative to establish an arts hub planned by Smith. Additional plans for the space will be revealed at a later date.
The Opening reception for Write Large and Thick will take place Friday June 2nd, 2017 from 7 – 9pm and will remain on view via appointment until Friday July 14th, 2017.
