Brooklyn, NY – ART 3 gallery is pleased to present solo exhibition JULIETTE DUMAS NO SAFE HARBOR. This will
be Dumas debut solo exhibition in New York and her first with the gallery. On view at ART 3 gallery, 109 Ingraham
Street, Bushwick, Brooklyn, from September 7 to October 2, 2016, Wed-Sat 12-6 PM, Sun 1-5 PM. The opening will
take place on Friday September 16, 6 - 9 PM.
Juliette Dumas creates conceptual artworks that address our strained relationship with nature. Dumas uses the
physical properties of her materials and the dynamics of their interaction, to create poignant metaphors for
humanity’s struggle to control the effects of environmental degradation.
In many of her works, Dumas portrays the tension between the natural world and humanity’s obsession with
petroleum-based products. In her series entitled “Strategies of Resistance,” Dumas depicts natural materials, such
as stone and wood, held in a state of suspension by plastic materials that are stretched and stressed by the
relationship. The tension that results from the weight of the stones lined up in the plastic refer to political resistance.
Similarly, in her work entitled “Frozen Plates: collaborations with the cold”, Dumas attempts to collaborate with
Nature to create drawings. She will draw with a stick on metal plates leaving them in the freezing cold which in time
will reveal the drawings. The end results are stunning black and white silver gelatin prints that capture the ephemeral
drawings. In this poetic work, Dumas asks us to consider whether our collective approach to managing
environmental outcomes is any less futile than the strategies she employs to control the outcomes of her artistic

ABOUT JULIETTE DUMAS (French, b. 1987 in Paris France, lives and works in Brooklyn, NY)
Conceptual artist whose work is informed by a deep preoccupation about planet earth and our relationship to it.
Dumas graduated in 2013 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was nominated as a candidate for the
Clare Rosen & Samuel Edes Foundation Prize for Emerging Artists by the Painting and Drawing Department of the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2015 she was the recipient off Winter Studies, Curated by Alf Setzer, Kunstverein Gaestezimmer
E.V, Stuttgart, Germany.
ART 3 gallery is a dynamic contemporary art gallery located in Bushwick's vibrant arts district. Established in February 2014 by Silas
