Jenny Bhatt is preparing to exhibit her next solo project as part of the Mumbai Gallery Weekend, at Gallery Art n Soul.
This is episode 18 of her ongoing series MokshaShots, titled ‘Swimming in the Subconscious’.
Jenny works within a concept she created, called MokshaShots.
In eastern philosophy, ‘Moksha’ means salvation. A MokshaShot is a taste of the Sublime. Everyone can make their own MokshaShot out of anything they find fulfilling…art, chocolate, a vacation, a smile, a Ferrari or a tequila shot!
Jenny Bhatt has marked her presence in the art world since the mid nineties and her work continues to evolve over time. She has 17 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions to her credit, both in India and internationally. Her work has been auctioned by Christie’s amongst other auction houses.
Bhatt has been a game changer of sorts. She takes the unconventional route of making pop surreal art in India. Her influences include pop art, pop culture, eastern philosophy, spirituality and psychedelia.
The current MokshaShots series ‘Swimming in the Subconscious’ takes the form of pop yantras and urban mindscapes. The works laced with humour, are pop surreal abstractions that explore subconscious states. Her work is situated within the exciting, young art movement of Pop Surrealism, which grew from it’s predecessors of Pop Art and Surrealism.
It remains true to its Indian aesthetic, while absorbing influences from Pop Art and global, digital visual languages. The style is intuitive and playful, grappling with everything from meditative states, memory and nostalgia, to the influence of pop culture and media. The works often reference digital imagery that is easily recognisable from it’s everyday use.
Having worked in multiple media in the past, including painting, sculpture, digital interactive art and design, Jenny is now expanding her work into comic narratives.
In July 2016, she started the MokshaShots Webcomic, featuring deity characters from the first MokshaShots series.
It was recently released as the first MokshaShots Comic Book and will be part of the exhibition.
