The paintings in the exhibition reference notable people, events, concepts from history - ranging from Dante and Napolian - to current pop culture icons such as Kim Kardasion. Each subject is explored conceptually through the lens of mathematics; depicted in geometric equation, SOS code, and braille. Saiers's deep understanding of geometry from his background as mathematical prodegy - having completed his PhD at age 23, and going on to have a very successful Hedge Fund before working at as artist full time, and having shown at Harvard University's Leveratt House and other influential institutions. With simple geometric shapes, words, and at times aggressive washes of paint, saiers wrestles with some of the most profound ideas and mysteries of life.
Original Letter of Napoleon is a Message-in-a-Bottle Alongside Inferno and Kardashian Pieces in Landmark Lobby
The paintings in the exhibition explore influential individuals, events, and historical concepts ranging from Dante’s Infernoto Kim Kardashian’s famous derriere to an original letter from Napoleon that performs its best message-in-a-bottle impression as part of a ranging piece. All of the pieces explore these concepts and personalities through the lens of mathematics and pop culture, and through the vocabulary of art and braille.
Saiers' deep understanding of geometry and vivid memories and dreams of a childhood haunted with warfare in Ethiopia and Afghanistan motivate and inform the work. With geometric shapes, words, and, at times, aggressive washes of paint, Saiers wrestles with some of the most profound ideas and the many mysteries of life.
In “Right or Wrong,” Saiers depicts the fall of Napoleon and the return of the Bourbons through mathematics. The piece includes Bonaparte's defeat by the 6th and 7th coalitions and his exile in Elba. Even the theory that he died of arsenic poisoning from the green paint (Scheele) in his St. Helena prison is addressed in the piece. Conspicuously absent from the piece is the use of braille.
Saiers also offers an “Ode to Kandinsky No. 4” for the revolutionary painter, Wasily Kandisnky, who was known to "use" the sounds of music to produce art. Some theorize it was due to his suffering from synesthesia, but music and math have been celebrated as interrelated since the time of Pythagoras. The main driver behind the composition is not music but the mathematics music is based on. This "Kandinsky-like" composition also incorporates an idea around the famous Russian’s composition no. 4.
Gallery hours are 11am-6pm and by Appointment
