Kium, a Malaysian artist who is not just a trained artist but has vivid and aesthetic sense in her Chinese paintings. Art WeMe presents Kium’s 40 artworks in her 10 years art career, including some of her classic series and her new launch “Infinite Circles” which has its first appearance in the world. Unlike her other series, “Infinite Circles” features a connection between art and self-consciousness. Kium’s paintings cannot be defined either meticulous (Gongbi) or freehand (Xieyi), which are two conventional styles of Chinese painting. Instead, Kium transfers her passion to vibrant and bright colours on rice papers which represent her honest emotion in contemporary Chinese art.

“Infinite Circles” series has its first appearance in the world. The artist creates an impression of depth onto very thin rice papers, inviting viewers to look deeply into each painting. Individuals will draw their own conclusion as to what they are seeing as they ponder on their own emotions and experiences. After Kium refers an idea of conventional changes of Chinese paintings, “Infinite Circles” series is not only Chinese painting but also contemporary art. Perception often shows viewers’ feeling by how they interpret artist’s artwork. Kium merges skills of Chinese paintings and concepts of contemporary art which elevates contemporary Chinese paintings to the spiritual discussion. “Organics" series is created after she visited limestone caves in Guilin, China. She was astonished by a landscape of limestones which formed by each different shape of limes and colourful spotlights. For Kium, she felt that she was entering another world. She did not want to re-create the real landscape of limestone cave but to had a mysterious phenomenon by using colour gradient on simplified outlined shapes of lime stones. Whole rice paper is filled with wired shapes of lime stones and varied colours which imply a magnificent and mystifying landscape of limestone cave. Kium communicates with her audiences by colours which appeals a new viewpoint apart from the notion of “Ink is colour.” Besides, limestone cave is a rare subject for Chinese painters, it is also a feature of Kium’s paintings by which choose unconventional theme to evoke any possibility and creativity of art.
In Kium’s paintings, she combines traditional brushes and colours with high saturation. For example, “Contrast & Harmony” features Kium’s intention to innovate Chinese paintings. “Salute to the Classics”, the artist salutes past ink and brush works; rethinks, rejuvenates and changes the original story forwarded by the old masters. She uses the silhouette of her beloved golden retriever as her self-portrait to communicate and reconcile her ideas with the old masters. Incidentally, the silhouette also depicts the artist's attempt to merge common culture (Chinese red paper cut craft) with high art. “Four Seasons”. The artist purposely contrasts her brightly coloured flower patterns with traditional shanshui strokes to form a surreal but harmonised painting. Either Oriental ink and brush or Western oils, typically both show the four seasons with the differing landscapes or plants caused by the changing seasons. In contrast, the artist simply uses colours to depict her series. In this way, artwork contains her theory; art should be an expression of freedom, unbounded by conventions.

Kium’s art is based on a reflection of Chinese painting techniques and styles. The traditional Chinese painting techniques include sketch, rub, dot-dye, embellishing. Styles include Meticulous (Gonbi) , freehand (Xieyi) or splash-ink and Zen-like painting. These techniques and styles have been applied in many masterpieces for over thousands of years in the history of Chinese painting. Kium seeks a new interpretation of contemporary Chinese painting which has become her goal in her art career. She believes art is all about “beauty and passion. Therefore, we barely to see traditional arrangement of Chinese painting in her works of art. On the contrary, she depicts her emotion about endless circle of life.
