Solo Exhibition – The Making of Islands - Contemporary paintings
In April 2018, Arte Globale introduces the exciting new works by Wei Tan.
London, 3 April 2018 — Arte Globale is excited to announce the first solo exhibition with the gallery of artist Wei Tan, taking place from 6 April - 2 June 2018. The gallery’s showcase will mark the first-ever presentation of the new paintings by Malaysian born, Berlin-based artist.
‘The Making of Islands’ (2017) is the title of a work from Wei Tan’s ongoing abstract painting project. Working in an improvisatory, journal-like manner, the artist mixes wet and dry material on large canvases through spontaneous gesture. Runny acrylic, powdery pastels, and viscous oil clash into each other creating haphazard geographies. The process of automatic drawing allows thoughts from the subconscious to emerge and form a narrative. Wei Tan’s paintings exist in a space between the real and the abstract, where quasi real-life objects float in a sea of abstract colours and forms. They are like islands constantly in the making. At once brutal as mirrors and gentle as sanctuaries, the paintings both expose and harbour her fluctuating states of mind.
‘My Shoe Fell into a Tree Trunk Full of Stuff’
– Wei Tan on one of her latest work
‘At this time I was craving for real forms to appear in my paintings. Instead of the pure energetic gestures in my previous work, I wanted to create environments with inanimate objects. The sense of life and character in everyday objects such as chairs, books, and clothing started to fascinate me. I felt that these lifeless objects somehow conveyed the strongest and most melancholic of emotions. In this painting, a shoe (at the top centre) is falling into an old tree trunk. As it is falling it finds many other objects inside the tree. It turns out that this tree is a secret playground where mundane objects come to life, hidden from the humans outside. Shoes are often present in my paintings as when I paint I take off my shoes and place them aside, where my eyes constantly wander.’ – Wei Tan
