Introduction by Maurizio Pellegrin
Dean, National Academy School
The work of Sofia Echa is embodied by the passage of color through a space of reflective images and lights. Illusion melts into reality. Temporal images of the viewer in front of the metal sheets provide the illusion of grasping the intangible.
The front and back of these hard surfaces are in dialogue with the apparent calm produced by the choice of palette. Below a thick glossy coat, every stroke is a movement of the hand and also a statement of Japanese influences.
Her work is about traversing a space, with mute tones and cold memories, leaving traces that sometimes appear as soft lacerations on an exposed and fragile universe. All this movement in the surface is almost frozen in a moment of poetic stillness, without time, without indicating a subject or an event; only an action in a suspended moment of life.
