Used in architectural theory, Genius Loci is a Latin expression meaning “the spirit of places”. Through the abstract interpretation of places in her memories, Marina Esmeraldo created an art installation combining mural painting, relief works and one-of-a-kind sculptures.
GENIUS LOCI, or the spirit of places, is a series of relief works and sculptures, presented at Espacio 88, Barcelona, by multidisciplinary artist Marina Esmeraldo. The project pursues the abstract interpretation of the essence of places, capturing memories from the artist's travels, a recurring theme in her work. The dioramas of the GENIUS LOCI installation celebrate the merging of her present as and artist with her past as an architect and her passion for the built space. The installation is born from a snake-eats-its-tail process, consisting of wooden constructions based on paintings based on paper constructions built by the artist.
