Artist's Proof is pleased to announce Welded Fractals: Featuring works by Washington, D.C. artist Craig Schaffer. A curated selection of Schaffer's Fractal series will be on view this fall. Please join us for the opening reception which coincides with the Georgetown Galleries on Bookhill Fall Art Walk on September 7th, 2019 from 5-8PM. Later in the month, we will host a Meet the Artist event with Craig Schaffer.
Schaffer's sculptures represent the dynamic and powerful meditations on the reality of geometric repetition in the natural world. These sculptures explore the shapes created by the branching of plants to catch the sunlight, the convoluted unfurling of clouds, the formation, and fracturing of mountains from the forces within the earth. Because of the nonlinear, reflexive nature of physical processes, they tend to create spiral forms. Schaffer's sculptures, instead of illustrating any specific phenomenon, grow in the same reflexive manner as real complex systems. Currently, Schaffer maintains two studios: one in Washington, D.C and the other in Pietrasanta, Italy.
Craig Schaffer received his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz and his M.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, Craig maintains two studios: one in Washington, D.C. and the other in Pietrasanta, Italy. Craig has completed public commissions for the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies, the Mathematical Association of America, Brown Tower Mathematics Building at Ohio State University, Baptist Hospital Desoto in Memphis, the Hualien Cultural Center in Taiwan, the Leo Yassenoff Jewish Community Center in Columbus, and the Robins Center for Philanthropy.
