Artists Studios is pleased to present “Light, Water and Duality” an online solo exhibition of new paintings by Suejin Jo. When seen together, Suejin Jo’s compositions present an array of color combinations that emerge from the mix and layering of acrylic and oil-based pigments.

In this new series, each canvas - except one - presents the basic shape of the triangle in different guises. Sometimes this motif appears as a towering monument that stands in front of a clouded sky, as seen in “Light in the Dark.” (2017) In others such as “Be Strong 2017” (2017), Suejin Jo inverts the triangle and points it down to suggest a sense of gravity.
The paintings on view in “Light, Water and Duality” maintain an aura of the indefinite, where spheres of moisture are brought out by the insoluble nature of oil with water. Even though the paintings’ titles define the context that the artist intends to convey, Suejin Jo’s artworks establish new textures that open up new associations between word and color.
“Light, Water and Duality” also brings viewers into the artist’s methodical, hermetic environment. The paintings in this exhibition range in size from 20” x 16” to 40” x 30”. Each composition, moreover, is meant to be seen both up close and far away. The artist’s brushstrokes are very much like verbal intonations wherein words sound different when heard from afar.
The fine details that one sees close up are like soft-spoken ideas, seen particularly through the intricate overlay of color drips. Bristle paint marks emerge slowly through the initial din of hue. As a result Suejin Jo pulls apart the color wheel with subtle contrasts that render visual illusions, suggesting an airy, lightweight atmosphere.
