Already 3 years ago Bruno Kuhlmann opened a discourse on painting in its historical dimension. Now it is followed by the second part, in which the artist continues this game with the history of modernity, focused on the famous artist group DER BLAUE REITER from Munich.
'Blue Rider IN THE SKY, Part 2' (2014/16, 24 min 22 sec on DVD), a digital film loop published as an edition, traces the 20th century as a kind of visual quarry. Based on a script of his friend Stephan Richter Bruno Kuhlmann cuts fictional episodes from the life of the protagonists of the Blue Rider, F. Marc, W. Kandinsky, G. Münter, P. Klee with associative image, film and sound sequences together. In addition to the heal and heroic appearance of art history, the video approaches these people in their historical and cultural context. "DEPICTION? WE DO NOT MAKE THAT ANYMORE! ". The title alludes to the great achievement that Modernism has achieved by turning away from representational art. And for the fact that these abstractions are themselves illustrations in two ways, once as the painting and as medial reproduction, through which we mainly perceive them. Bruno Kuhlmann, who studied painting as well as art history, takes up the elements of classical abstraction in painting and drawing, plays with them, solves them and attempts to put them into the imagery of the 21st century. Again and again he expands a formalistic construct with a narrative dimension. The result is a personal discourse, not only in the individual works, but also between the painting and the works on paper, which refer to each other in their hanging as well as their formal content.
