CHICAGO, IL – ARTSPACE 8, located in the 900 North Michigan Shops (3rd & 4th Floor), is proud to unveil E LA VITA / ES LA VIDA (It’s Life), an exhibition of new works by Italian-born, Turin-based painter, Silvio Porzionato, and Venezuelan-born, Chicago-based painter, Fidel Rodriguez from April 8 – May 9 2016. The two-person exhibit will showcase new paintings by two artists who are mutually reinvigoratinsg painting in its different manifestations. Figurative painter, Silvio Porzionato, and abstract painter, Fidel Rodriguez, represent contemplative counterparts, both walking the tightrope between abstraction and figuration. Simultaneously exploring and pushing the possibilities for new painting in today’s contemporary art scene, E LA VITA / ES LA VIDA (IT’S LIFE) joins together and juxtaposes the work of two artists for whom the medium of oil and canvas continue to be a significant source of renewal and invention.
Silvio Porzionato’s photorealistic portraits are large, virtuosic paintings reminiscent of celebrated portrait artist, Chuck Close. Porzionato couples savage eroticism and bravura technique to reflect on the emotional experience of time while bending and expanding the relation of the perception of the body to the viewer.
Fidel Rodriguez’s abstract canvases operate on a similar level, engaging with the perception of time and cyclical processes. Uncannily elegant abstractions slathered in cloudy brushwork and furiously scribbled with symbols, numbers, and letters, represent spiritual transformation and universal patterns found in nature.
In celebration of E LA VITA / ES LA VIDA (It’s Life) on view at ARTSPACE 8, a public reception will be held April 8 from 5:30-8 pm with special remarks by Silvio Porzionato and Fidel Rodriguez. During the reception, Italian wines will be provided and served by Felix Lady Imports, a Chicago-based Importer and Distributor focused on exceptional quality wine, unique beer, and other specialty imports bursting with passion and culture.
Silvio Porzionato (b. 1971, Moncalieri, Italy) has exhibited internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions. He has won the Leonardo Award (2010), Critics Award at Art Saluzzo, and selected for the 54th Venice Biennale (2011) for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy. Most recently, he has created work for the permanent collection at the Museum of Arban Art in Turin, Italy.
Fidel Rodriguez (b. 1972, Caracas, Venezuela) studied Fine Art at the Armando Reveron University Institute in Caracas, Venezuela and has shown extensively in New York and Chicago including KM Fine Arts, Monique Goldstrom Gallery, as well as the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art and Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois.
