aura gallery taipei is pleased to announce our participation in The Photography Show 2017. This marks our inaugural appearance at the fair. We will present a dual presentation of Issei Suda (1940, Japan) and Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao (1977, US,Taiwan), whose works recorded the social landscape in distinctive perspectives. The display of Suda and Liao’s works will highlight the contrast between time (80’s / current), format (vintage cibachrome / large digital prints) and perspective (snap street shots / panoramic view) and provide an interesting dialogue of photography aesthetic.
Suda is famous for his 6x6 black and white photography showing unsettling and otherworldly moments. “Taipei Kissyo”, the series Suda took during his first visit to Taipei in 1984, was an unusual example of how he explores the interstices between ordinary life and extraordinary occasions - “Taipei Kissyo” is a rare color series by the artist. The 31 images present not only a disappearing decade of Asia society but also the aesthetic of Suda – revealing the subtle drama inhabiting in everyday moments. aura gallery taipei will present the whole set of vintage cibachrome which printed for the exhibition in 1985.
For more than a decade, Liao has researched and documented the social landscape and complex chemistry of New York City. He has perfected his method of stitching together several exposures to create one continuous panoramic image that vividly reflected the photographer’s observations that day. In the latest year, he has been starting shooting his hometown Taiwan where he probes the culture from festivals and folk events.
