Aurora Vigil-Escalera Art Gallery presents, from July 7th to August 21st 2017, Santiago Picatoste´s first monographic exhibition in Asturias, entitled ATLAS.
ATLAS features a selection of the latest works by this Spanish artist born in Mallorca wherein, as has become customary, he delves in the psychology of shape and color, and the sensory and aesthetic experience within it.
Picatoste´s colorful abstractions gathered under the title ATLAS, are conceived as metaphorical landscapes wherein the artist demonstrates his domain of color and traditional painting, while combining the latter with industrial materials such as methacrylate, which works as a support for the whole exhibition.
Amid those methacrylate sheets the artist merges and freezes movement, gesture and shape, similarly to a test tube while being examined under a microscope, as Santiago himself describes when referring to his work.
Undoubtedly color is the protagonist at Santiago Picatoste´s work. Yellow, black, pink, and blue hues serve as a background while simultaneously blanketing a strongly suggestive and vibrant painting technique, inherited from abstract expressionism and
imbued in a new Post-Pictorial Abstraction with links to Pop Art or Graffiti.
Picatoste is one of the artists with a wider national and international scope at the gallery. His solid career has driven him to participate in some of the most prominent art fairs within and outside our borders. As is the case for ARCO where he participates from 2002; international art fairs such as Art Verona or Art Bologne in Italy; SP Art in Sao Paulo, Brasil; Karlsruhe Art Fair in Germany; or Pinta and Pulse in New York; among many others.
Santiago received a grant by the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation in Mallorca, and La Casa Velazquez in Madrid. His work has made him worthy of awards such as IBERART Painting Award, by ABC Museum in Madrid & The Griffin gallery, in London, as well as the International Sculpture Award by The Gabbarron Foundation Sculpture in the United States of America.
