Aurora Vigil-Escalera Art Gallery presents from March 17th to May - 2nd, the exhibition UTOPOS / DISTOPOS by Gorka García. The show represents the latest project the artist has been working on, which also entitles the exhibition : UTOPOS / DISTOPOS.
UTOPOS / DISTOPOS is named after a character from the novel UTOPIA by Tomás Moro, published in 1516. UTOPIA is where the story takes place, while DISTOPOS is a fictitious character fabricated by Gorka García.
This project intends to deepen and reflect upon the existent relationship between a number of varied utopian approaches posed through history by renowned thinkers such as Platón, Rousseau, Comte or Marx, among others, and the somehow “Dystopian” world we live in nowadays. In order to do this, Gorka takes on the Renassaince aesthetic – a strongly utopian historic period - as a utopia paradigm, and as a “Distopia” paradigm, the artist takes up a selection of contemporary cities devastated by war.
Ultimately this show involves a conceptual as well as aesthetic counterpoint, highly planed, harmonic, linear and colorful compositions come first, later come the casual and anarchic, wherein piles of rubble or demolished buildings that skip any logic and are heavily monochromatic.
Graduated in Fine Art by the Basque Country University, Gorka García lives in Italy for a year, due to a grant that allows him to study one of the academic years at the Fine Art Academy of Ravenna. After his time at University, his learning process continued at painter Alejandro Quincoces´studio, and Gorka receives a number of grants.
