PRESS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From May 14 through July 3, BCB ART will exhibit QUIETUS, new paintings by RICHARD BUTLER.
With his daughter as his muse, Richard Butler depicts lush expressionistic portraits of a pensive female, who serves as a cipher for himself. Butler explains:
“In a way I think all of my paintings are self-portraits in that, though the face I am painting may not be my own, the feeling
I get back from the painting is certainly an important element of my own psyche.”
Focused on the material qualities of his medium, Butler smudges, distorts, and overlays patterns onto his models’ faces, creating dynamic compositions that are both naturalistic and hallucinatory.
“Richard Butler’s brushwork qualifies him as a realist, alert to particulars and generous in recording them. He gives the visible a lush intensity. And he does more, overlaying his images of female faces with passages that, when they are dark, might be shadows. When they are light we could see them as reflections, yet neither of these readings makes convincing sense. For the overlays take shapes that shadows and reflections never do. Perhaps they are masks of a kind, designed not to hide but to reveal psychic interiors that faces alone would leave obscure. In Butler’s paintings, surfaces have the mystery of depths.” Carter Ratcliff, Contributing Editor, Art in America
Butler was trained as a painter at the prestigious Epsom School of Art & Design in London, but he is also known as the singer/songwriter for the acclaimed rock band, The Psychedelic Furs. Richard Butler lives and works in New York.
