Subject: Reopening Following Renovations
When Kate and I signed the lease for 5 Market Place, the old White Horse Hotel in August 2016 we had no idea the journey we were on! 5 weeks later we opened the gallery space having relocated the business from the quaint by rural Nunnington Studios. The graft to turn a shell into a place of inspiration was arduous, fun, tiring, challenging and ultimately rewarding. However, we knew we would be doing it all again less than a year later due to the state of the building's shell. The render was ruined over half of the walls, the windows hadn't been painted in many years and the building was suffering the effects of many years of neglect.
We were luck with our landlord, who listened to our pitch to renovate in style, more luck was found in Little Greene who provided copious litres of paint for the detailing outside and the walls inside.
One of the elements of our pitch was to use local tradesmen, who had a vested interest in keeping the building in good repair and who enjoyed it's historic place in the town. It has been a pleasure to work with one and all through a project that has morphed from a light renovation to a full blown job hampered at every step by the unseasonal weather.
The final hurdles are being jumped now as we touch up and begin to curate for the show that opens on Saturday. Key artists in the show include Tony Laverick, Alex McCarthy, Anne-Sophie Gilloen, Valerie Price-West, Lara Scobie and Albert Montserrat for ceramics, Marko Humphrey-Lahti, Simon Gudgeon, Michael Thacker, Philip Wakeham, Helen Sinclair, Jo Hatty, Mel Fraser and Nichola Theakston for sculpture. Paintings have been supplied by Eva Humphrey-Lahti, Kerr Ashmore, Carne Griffiths, Laura Rich, Hilary Turnbull and Louise McNaught.
The whole team will be in on Saturday so please do come and speak to Kate, Nick, Layla or Mike for any information about an artist. We have many a passionate tail to tell...
